What's Hip Hop?

Hip Hop may sound like some sort of children’s game, or maybe an exercise to tone up your thighs, but it is neither. It is actually a form of music and cultural expression.

It originated as an offshoot of the Rap scene, which came from the urban American Black community. In the 1970’s, many urban Black teenagers were frustrated with the “water-down” music they were hearing on local radio stations. The music was aimed at the more mainstream audiences, and they wanted something bold and different, something to voice their feelings. Thus, Rap was born, and later Hip Hop.

Looking back at the infancy of Hip Hop, it was initially composed of four distinct elements: graffiti art, break dancing, DJ cutting and scratching, and rapping done by an emcee. From there, it evolved its own language, dress style, music and mind set. Over time, the break dancing and graffiti faded from the scene, and some people called Hip Hop and Rap the same thing. That is not the case!

By the 1980’s, Hip Hop had come into its own. It was more complex, the simple rapping of the emcee being replaced by artists who sang metaphoric lyrics, and backed by complex, multi-layered beats. It was at this time Hip Hop burst into the mainstream and went international. Previously, it had been strictly an American phenomenon. At that point in time, he began to appear in England, Belgium, Spain, Greece and other nations. Even Cuba saw the rise in Hip Hop.

There followed a time of great diversification in Hip Hop. Originally, as previously noted, it had been uniquely an urban Black style of entertainment. This changed as Latinos, Whites and women began to enjoy it, and give their own slant to the music. Soon, a number of mainstream groups were releasing albums with Hip Hop aimed at those demographics.

All of this continued into the 1990’s, along with the worldwide growth of the genre. Nations like South Africa, Italy, France and Germany saw Hip Hop rise in popularity and be influenced by the local music styles. Thus, Hip Hop became further diversified. Meanwhile, in the United States, the West Coast began to dominate the scene.

Today, Hip Hop remains an international music style. It has spread into the Scandinavian countries and Tanzania, to name but a few. In America, it remains a popular genre of music with a whole host of performers. And, there are many varieties; some bring in jazz, classic rock or heavy metal to create a whole new sound. Considering that naysayers said in the 1980’s that it was a “flash in the pain” and would not last, it is clear that Hip Hop is a strong and vibrant music style that is here to stay.

Ringtones Must Have

Just as land phones changed from purely functional pieces of equipment to ones shaped like footballs and Mickey Mouse, it didn’t take long for cell phones to follow suit and become more novelty than function. And with technological advances, those novelties can be fairly extreme.

A ring tone is a simple function. It is the sound that indicates an incoming call. And for years all that was available in a land line or a cell phone was a basic ring. But technology soon allowed for a greater variety of sound and tones. Cell phones began offering preprogrammed ring tones with different combinations of rings. But they were all fairly basic.

Today ring tones are used to express individual style. They can showcase a favorite song or artist or pay tribute to a favorite movie or TV program. Cell phone companies typically have a basic selection of ring tones available on the phone when it is purchased. Additional ring tones have to be purchased.

Customers can visit the cell phone company’s website and preview the optional ring tones. When they are ready to purchase, they enter information about the model of cell phone they have. Not all cell phones are equipped to handle the newer ring tones. This feature becomes a selling point for customers wanting the newest technology.

If the cell phone can handle the ring tone, then the purchase proceeds and the customer makes a credit card payment or has the charge placed on their next bill. Then the ring tone is sent to the cell phone as an incoming message. Independent companies also offer ring tones and backgrounds. The process works basically the same way through a website.

A ring tone refers to a either a basic ring sound or a song that is played on the simple keyboard. Think about a favorite song converted to an instrumental and then played by a beginning piano student – that’s a ring tone. True tones are the actual song performed by the original artist or in some cases by a cover band. True tones require more advanced cell phones than ring tones do.

Both ring tones and true tones run the gamut on style and allow the user to customize his or her phone with choices from country music, rock and roll, TV theme songs, 70s and 80s songs and current hits. The ring tone can be the theme from Charlie’s Angels or Dallas or perhaps a favorite song from the Beastie Boys. The choices seem endless. The websites will allow you to preview the ring tone or true tone before you purchase. This will let you know what portion of the song you are getting and whether or not you like the quality.

Today’s cell phones contain more and more computer technology. And like the home computer, more advanced cell phones now offer a selection of backgrounds. Purely for entertainment value, the background is the image that appears on the screen of the cell phone. Like ring tones, cell phones now come with a selection of basic backgrounds to choose from. Additional styles can be purchased either from the cell phone company or from independent companies.

The variety for backgrounds covers virtually any hobby or personal interest. National heritage, favorite cars, celebrities, soccer stars, animals, football, girls in bikinis, girls in less than bikinis and more can be used as a background. And now since most cell phones also come equipped with a built-in camera feature, you can take a picture of your child, your pet, your kitchen sink – whatever you like – and use it as your background.

The Best and Easiest Way to Fix a Blown Out Speaker

Stereo speakers are built to last. Every time you turn them on they are submitted to abuse and punishment, even more so depending on the type of music you listen to. For example, music with heavy bass shakes everything in your home. Imagine what is going on in the speaker cone. Even the best, quality stereo speakers are bound to crackle from all of this abuse over time. When that happens, you may have the chance to save yourself some money by repairing those broken speakers instead of buying new ones.

It all starts with finding the problem causing the sound problems. It can be an enclosure damaged or maybe it blew out from an electrical or thermal fuse. Problems with the voice coil are a common problem, sometimes the crossover network is faulty and even problems as easy as a solder connection can be the cause of your problems. Whatever your speaker issue maybe, it can be fixed. Here is a breakdown of how you can repair a speaker that is blown out.

The first thing you need to do is figure out which speaker is giving you problems. You can easily do this by playing around with the stereo’s equalizer. Alter the balance and the fader to isolate the speaker causing the distortion in sound or if there is no sound at all. Be sure not to have the volume blasting or you run the risk of blowing out a good speaker.

Once you’ve figured out which speaker is the bad one, you now need to take it apart. Try to do this step carefully because you don’t want to cause further damage to a part which is working fine. Remove the faceplate of the speaker and then gently loosen the seams of the speaker’s fabric without tearing it.

Now that the speaker cone is visible, you can begin repairing it. Have some tape or glue handy since this is what you will primarily be using if the cone of the speaker is punctured or torn. You’ll want to make sure the hole or tear is completely covered before moving on to the next step.

Test the voice coil to see if it is damaged in any way such as if it melted at some point for example. If there is even the tiniest of gaps in the coil, no sound will flow from the speaker or it will sound extremely distorted, depending on the size. If you see that the voice coil is indeed melted, then just replace the speaker entirely.

If you’re going to need any replacement parts, now is the time to order them. They can either be found directly from the manufacturer but they can be expensive or from stereo specialties shops. An often overlooked fact is to know the part number or numbers of the pieces you are looking for. They are normally located on the inside of the speaker or backside of the cone. Doing so will make your life an awful lot easier.

Now that you have all parts you need to properly fix the speaker, take a look at how the damaged part is attached to the speaker. Once you remove the broken piece, you are going to need to install the new one the same way.

Now that you are all completed putting the speaker back to together, the only thing left to do is test to see if all your hard work paid off. Hook it back up to the stereo and test it at a low volume slowly turning the volume up to see if it can handle. If the speaker is still not working and you feel like did everything correctly, take it to a professional and let them fix it from there.

10 Reasons to Buy Music from Independent Artists

Musicians develop their own labels for many different reasons. My reason is partly because of a challenge I took on at a young age, to take what I was told was an unmarketable instrument, the violin, and create music that expressed emotions, touched hearts, and ultimately, sold. Whatever the reason for creating their own labels, musicians sometimes forget the advantages they hold and focus instead on the multitude of challenges.

As a gentle reminder to artists as well as their potential customers, I'm sharing my personal favorite reasons why I enjoy having my own label, and why music lovers should consciously choose to buy music from independent labels.

1. Independent musicians can freely express their passion and unique talent. They can express their own personal stories, follow their own instincts, and not have to follow orders from major label executives as to what they must create. From the customer's perspective, by exploring radio stations and other sources of independent music, they too are now free to make their own decisions as to what is hot and what is not.

2. Many of the common music distributors only offer music from major labels, and rarely do they give anything for free, no matter how many albums you download or cds you buy. An independent artist is free to be unique and generous in his sales methods. For the consumer, this can mean getting bulk discounts, coupon offers and appreciation for their repeat purchases.

3. The independent musician can communicate directly with the customer, so online sales doesn't have to feel like an isolating experience for the artist. Many times the thrill of receiving an email directly from the musician can turn an independent label music purchaser into a devout fan.

4. Niche marketing is all the buzz these days, and nowhere is it more successful than in independent music. As an independent musician, you are free to create your own unique niche and, in the process, reach more ideal fans. As someone who buys music from an independent label, you can find it easier to discover the music that defines and expresses YOU as well.

5. By buying from independent labels, customers and musicians can share the love. Think of it this way, here's one scenario. A music lover makes a purchase. The independent musician has total control over what is communicated in the thank-you message. The customer can write back. The musician can quote the customer in his blog, the customer basks in the glory of the personal mention and shares it with all his friends on his Facebook page. Backlinks abound. Try that when you purchase from a major label.

6. Everyone feels more authentic. A MySpace page is more authentic than a billboard. A blog is more authentic than a press release. As an independent musician you can replace corporate communications with the real you, and your fans can comment on your webpage and get a direct response from you with their name on it.

7. At a time when many music retailers are closing their doors, customers can find their favorite independent musician's music by buying it directly from the artist. Musicians with a well defined niche and loyal, avid fans can remain untouched by the ups and downs of the retail music industry.

8. An independent musician can develop his own website presence based on his own unique personality and style. Fans can hang out in a place where they can listen to new music clips, socialize, watch video performances, buy music, and share and build upon each other's excitement. Everything is in one place, and they can discover a new musician or song, leave their comments, bookmark the site, make a purchase, and make new friends, all at the same time.

9. Musicians get a bigger cut from the sale of their music. This may seem obvious, but if customers could see the portions their favorite musicians receive from major labels, they would make more effort to support independent musicians, and buy from independent labels.

10.Indie musicians can band together to support each other and further their own causes, in organizations such as Association of Independent Musicians, or Rock the Net, only two examples. Major record labels often limit what their artists can do or not do. Consumers can not only support the music they love, they can affiliate themselves with causes they believe in.

There are of course other reasons to buy music from independent artists, but this is a great list to keep both musicians and music lovers energized and aware.

Here’s Your Chance to learn how to Download Music Legally

Unless you live in a cave, you are fully aware of the growing popularity of downloading music on to your computer. It is now so mainstream that people ranging from teenagers to senior citizens own IPods. All of those people share one small issue with downloading music, however. Where can you legally download music without getting in any legal trouble and without paying an arm and leg for?

There are a few major vendors, such as iTunes and Napster, which offer catalogues of more than a million tracks, while some artists and bands are now selling songs directly from their own websites. Don’t expect to find full albums to download; only some "teasers" intended to get you to buy that artist’s new CD.

Here are a few ways you can get started downloading all of your favorite songs easier and worry free.

There is a big difference between streaming music and downloading music. Streaming is when the music plays live as you're connected to the Internet. Downloading is copying music directly to your computer's hard disk. You can listen to downloaded music anytime you feel like it since it’s saved to your computer, burn it on to a CD or transfer it to your IPod. Streaming music on the other hand lets you only listen to music if you are online.

No matter how you choose to get your online music, you are going to need the correct software to do it. More than likely, your computer came preinstalled with at least one media player that will work to stream music. If you don’t have one or looking to go with a different one try installing for free players such as RealOne, Winamp, Windows Media Player, or iTunes.

There are literally hundreds upon hundreds of different music websites available for any type of music choice you want to listen to. Browse around for a few that play music you enjoy. The most popular music download store is ITunes but there are other sites such as Limewire, eMusic.com, Listen.com, MP3.com and PressPlay.com.

Pay attention for finding individual songs that you are interested in. Even though a music download site has songs available from your favorite band, it does not mean that all of their songs will be. You run the risk of signing up for a website downloading service just to find out that they don’t have any of the songs you want to hear.

Look on the artist's or band’s official Web site. There are often time when bands try to promote new songs or albums by allowing their fans to freely download songs just for becoming a member of their site.

If you’re looking to simply listen to music while sitting if your office or at work, many radio stations now broadcast music through streaming it from their website for free.

Five Things the Introverted Must Know about Nightclubs - Part 2

Instead, you need to open strong with a dramatic, playful flirt... something like "Hey baby, you looked really smokin' out there on the dance floor! Very nice, I love that _____ look (mention something unique about her appearance), it's great!" Your delivery should be grand and powerful and spiked with good feelings.

2) The motives of women in nightclubs is different than that of the men, who are basically either trying to meet some hot bitch or get laid that night. On the other hand, many of the women are perfectly happy to tease the men and get their rocks off on all the slobbering male attention -- and that's the extent of it. They drink this psychological goo up like sweet honey – and the more determined they are to make a spectacle of themselves the more certain you can be this is what they're probably all about. Only the top players who are deep into the culture have a shot at these type of sexy airheads.

Outside the club these same girls can sport completely different personalities -- which is why I say it's best to try and meet them where they least expect it in everyday life. Of course, the attraction of the club scene is that the chicks are concentrated in one big pile for you to ogle and hit on -- whereas the opportunities are certainly far fewer and of a lower quality in real life. For those of you with limited patience or who feel that there aren't enough opportunities available in your daily life to effectively meet anyone worthwhile, then the clubs are probably your better option. Just understand these major differences and adapt to them. If you can't get into the hoppin' and boppin', high-energy aspect of it, then maybe those quieter corner bars might be a better bet for you.

3) You need to have excellent non-verbal communication skills. Why? Because most of these places are so loud you can barely hear yourself think much less communicate with anyone! Typical club music booms along at volume levels that will make your internal organs shudder, so IF the strongest part of your game revolves around your brilliant conversational skills you won't get to display much of your talent in this environment. In fact, you will just melt away into the wallpaper before long.

Communication in clubs consists mainly of groping, making-out and staring into each other's eyes... in other words, a lot of physical stuff. Next time you're out at one of these places just watch how much of this is going on. It takes a willingness to dive head first into this mode and get bold with your hands with women you hardly know. Does this sort of behavior fit your temperament? Can you grease up with a few shots of Ol' Grandad and get into the spirit of things even if you're normally far more reserved? Remember that we're not talking about reality here, but rather the strange universe of club reality.

4) Watch her eyes!... the eyes will always tell the tale and they will tell it immediately. If she won't bother to even meet your eye when you're trying to engage her I would suggest that you bail immediately. She's a Queen who's not interested in you for whatever reason, probably because she doesn't recognize you as being in the "club clique". You're not a full time player... just a poor amateur looking for a few thrills. Pushing further is likely to draw a more publicly humiliating rejection than anyone should have to suffer (like I did several times!). So you should be ready to sort through the women FAST in this environment. Speaking of which...

5) Everything is time-compressed in Clubworld. There's no messing around pulling phone numbers after long, sunny conversations. Clubworld is all about ACTION... this isn't a meet-and-date-later sort of situation -- it's all about having an adventure TONIGHT! That's why lots of touching, flirting, sexual innuendo are in order. The women are there to get fired-up and have some kind of adventure that evening, which could mean anything from a hair-ripping catfight with some other nasty bitch to getting porked by dreamy Mr. Disco. They are certainly not there to meet sweet nice guys for later dating. If that's what you're about then you will find yourself on the sidelines.

But... if you can learn how to take on a "club-face" for yourself – dance, circulate, get gossiped about by the women, become recognized as a familiar face, etc. -- then you can probably excel in this environment. You'll have to train yourself to compete against all the other top dog males just like an athletic event -- so get busy polishing up those dance moves, and remember that things here happen fast!

Five Things the Introverted Must Know about Nightclubs - Part 1

Bars and nightclubs can be tough for a lot of guys insofar as meeting women is concerned -- they are not part of the ordinary world in the sense that many of the usual social techniques that we use to impress each other crash and burn in this environment. The women look extra smokin' and are densely packed in one big room, but that's about where the advantages over everyday life pretty much end for most of us. Everyone has their attention focused on the top 10% of the hottest bodies moving around them like sleek, beautiful animals (and this goes for both the men AND the women). Because of this fantasy phenomenon, the rest of us look lessened and low quality in the shadow of the visually hottest.

For instance, if you happen to have the male disease of shortness like I do, you will seem that much shorter and perhaps even comical standing next to the towering, muscular Sven or his rap star look-alike buddy at the nightclub. Girls who would otherwise pick up a flirt in a grocery store isle will reject you in a heartbeat simply for failing to make that top 20% cut. It's an environment that requires a thick skin for casual rejection if you happen to strike an average pose, to say the least.

With that in mind, here's 5 important things to know about successfully socializing within the fantasy universe of bars and clubs:

1) The bar / club scene demands that you participate in the culture of what I call the "3-D's"... Dancing, Dressing, and the Displaying of attitude. You know what I'm talking about here and if you don't then you need to visit a few of these places and observe the dynamics going on for yourself. Guys who play the part expected of them by the foxy bar-queens that populate these places do the best. Whereas guys who stand around and watch, well... they stand around and watch. If these kinds of behaviors don't come natural to you, then you'll have to learn how to playact your way into this mindset because it's the only way that you'll have any sort of reasonable success-to-rejection ratio.

Begin by frequenting some of the best places near you. Watch and study the "players" who seem to always have women buzzing around them. These guys did not simply show up one day and rule the roost – they paid their dues by spending many evenings dancing and drinking, flirting and getting shot down, staying at it until they made a few breakthroughs... and finally making some "friends of a feather" and creating a little entourage for themselves. This doesn't happen overnight. It takes a commitment of time and money... cover fees, hot clothes, bar tabs, etc. It takes a commitment and desire to burrow deep into this scene and become at ease within it.

Extroverts naturally do much better than introverts in the high-pressure club environment because they take to the whole dancing-drinking-romancing thing like a fish to water, whereas introverts tend to turtle up and become cautious... a demeanor that can make you all but socially invisible. A meek little "Hi my name is Joe..." will likely be ignored -- you just won't show up on anyone's radar giving off personality power this feeble.
